Marathon House

Featured in DWELL Magazine, HGTV, and on the Fine Living Network

A 4,000 Sq. foot home in Emigration Canyon.

The Marathon House is the prototypical example of Jespersen Design Associates modernism. Incorporating fundamental materials of glass, stone, steel, wood and stucco the house sits atop a south facing bluff with uninterrupted views across the canyon. Backing up to dedicated green space and built low to the grade, the house sits comfortably in the site.

The house is one level with 11' ceilings. We utilized storefront style glass sliders all along the south wall to maximize the views and create a pavilion like living space. A 5' overhang extends around the main section providing shade during the desert summer. A 90' travertine stone wall with a break for a glassed entry separates the house from the street and provides significant privacy. A bisecting bedroom wing faces due east.

The house has a courtyard lawn. Native and "as-was" vegetation surround the exterior sides of the home.

The interior space is open and simple. Juxtaposing walls of stone and glass provide contrast. A partition wall with 5' halls on each side separates kitchen, dining and living spaces from a media and home office space. The Master suite is generously proportioned and enjoys a private deck. Large walk-in closet and spa-like master bath compliment the suite.

The home was built to provide significant privacy as well as maximum visual openness. The home cleanly divides public and private spaces. Large bisecting hallways provide nice cross ventilation for comfortable indoor/outdoor living. Forced air with high efficiency furnaces and commercial quality double sided glass provide insulation and heating for Winter. Garage doors are wrapped in stainless steel.

Living in the house follows the time-line of the day with bedrooms in the East and family/living in the West.
